Cigar names such as Robusto, Toro and Churchill describe size and shape, not brand or flavor. Knowing what they mean makes it much easier to read a menu and choose with confidence.

How Cigars Are Measured

Every cigar has two measurements: length, in inches, and ring gauge, its diameter measured in 64ths of an inch. A 50 ring gauge cigar is 50/64 of an inch across. A Robusto listed as “5 × 50” is five inches long with a 50 ring gauge.

Common Straight-Sided Sizes (Parejos)

  • Robusto: about 5 × 50. A popular, shorter smoke.
  • Toro: about 6 × 50–52. A balanced, medium-length format.
  • Churchill: about 7 × 47–48. Long and elegant.
  • Corona: about 5½ × 42–44. Slimmer and more focused.
  • Double Corona: about 7½ inches or longer. Made for a long evening.

Exact measurements vary from one manufacturer to another, so treat these as typical ranges.

Shaped Cigars (Figurados)

Torpedos, Belicosos and Perfectos taper at one or both ends. Many smokers feel the tapered head concentrates the flavor on the palate. Cut these tips carefully with a straight cutter, V-cutter or punch from our accessories collection.

Which Size Should You Choose?

Choose by how much time you have and how the cigar feels in your hand. Thicker cigars tend to smoke cooler and slower, while slimmer ones can deliver a more concentrated taste. Our cigar shop keeps related sizes side by side within each brand, so you can compare them easily. For more help, read how to choose a premium cigar.
