How to Choose a Premium Cigar Based on Your Preferences

A selection of premium cigars arranged for comparison

Choosing a premium cigar is personal. There is no single “best” cigar, only the one that suits your taste, your schedule and the moment. These four questions make the choice easier.

Start with Strength and Body

Cigars range from mild to full-bodied. If you are new to premium cigars or prefer a lighter smoke, mild and medium blends, often finished with a Connecticut-shade wrapper, are a comfortable starting point. If you already enjoy bold, peppery or earthy flavors, a fuller-bodied blend may suit you better.

Let the Wrapper Guide Flavor

The outer leaf has a large influence on taste. Lighter wrappers tend to be creamy and smooth. Habano and Corojo wrappers often bring spice. Darker Maduro wrappers lean toward cocoa, coffee and natural sweetness. Flavor also depends on the filler blend, so treat the wrapper as a guide rather than a rule.

Match the Size to Your Time

A Robusto fits a shorter break, while a Toro or Churchill suits a longer evening. Ring gauge, the cigar’s thickness, changes how it draws and how warm the smoke feels. Our guide to cigar sizes and shapes explains the common formats.

Think About the Occasion

A celebratory dinner may call for something different than a quiet afternoon on the water. For outdoor settings, see our article on the best cigars for South Florida humidity.
